13year cicada

Drawing from multiple influences, 13Year Cicada charge from genre to genre with thrilling confidence. Vibraphone chiming and melodies skittering madly, the four piece band have on of the most unique sounds in the city. Here, we catch up with Zooey about the band's next moves.

BOT: Tell us a little about your band. What’s your sound?

Zooey: There are no guitars in our band, but we probably sound like an experimental rock band. We play vibraphone, electric bass, drums, synth and sing. Otherwise we most frequently take leaps into the voids of eclecticism.

Last week, we played a festival and while I was still hidden in my tent I could hear people talk about our concert, saying, 'There was this band, the one moment they went into this almost metal like noise thingy and the next they sounded like a fluffy indie band, very confusing, why couldn't they just decide?' It made me grin. I guess we just like everything.

BOT: Who are your biggest influences?

Z: There will be a mixtape coming up soon, so stay tuned! For now, Sonic Youth, Meredith Monk, Sun Ra, the last good improvised concert we've been to, any nice sounding construction site, people yelling at each other, the artwork of our last album.

Sun Ra live in Berlin '83.

BOT: What’s your ultimate aim?

Z: Heavy physical release while making music, for ourselves and everyone there. Channeling stuff. Getting closer.

BOT: What do we have to look forward to in the coming months from you?

Z: We released our album Totem Tongue on a wonderful label based in Barcelona, Gandula Records. And after having played in Barcelona in March with fellow label bands, we decided to invite them over. So there will be a huge party week, starting in Dresden, at a great house project called Kukulida, then moving to Schokoladen in Berlin, then to Kastananienkeller in Berlin and we are working on making something happen in Leipzig on the fourth day. The bands involved are ZA!, Big OK and Sara Fontán from Barcelona – all of whom are incredibly energetic live - Beatdenker from Dresden and SchnAAk from the Leipzig area. They are pretty much getting back together just for the occasion, so I'm stoked, because I never got to see them play live. We will be playing too and other gems like visuals and late night DJ sets are right now being planned. November 16-19 is the date, share your precious time; we'd be thrilled if you did!
