Adorable shields set to eleven as Charmpit joins us all the way from the UK at this month's Clash Symbols. The US/British four-piece represents everything joyous and unique about the re-emergence of the DIY indie scene. Catchy, upbeat songs with no shortage of party shout-outs: gird your indie pop loins!
BOT: Tell us a little about your band.
CHARMPIT: We are CHARMPIT, like a charming armpit! We are Alex (drums), Rhianydd (guitar), Anne Marie (bouncing bass) and Estella (lead guitar - sadly not with us this tour). Half of us grew up in Southern California, the other half in London - we are anar-cuties making joyous noise!
BOT: Why did you start to make music?
C: We started making music because it always looked extremely fun, but specifically we started so that Anne Marie and I (Rhi) could get through our first London winter in 2015 without falling prey to Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD). Charmpit was our sun lamp. We were enabled to do this by signing up to participate in a festival called First Timers (firsttimers.org), which is designed to support newcomers to music and address the lack of diversity in DIY music. Alex heard us playing and wanted to join in/learn drums, and then earlier this year Estella joined us to make four!
BOT: What’s been your best moment as a band so far?
C: Um, last night we played our first ever show in Europe at Vrankrijk in Amsterdam, and it was a dream! The crowd was really sweet and dancing up a storm, plus it’s awesome to see a thriving social centre still located in the heart of a city!
BOT: Who are three bands everyone should listen to right now?
C: Kermes, Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries and Shamir!
BOT: How do you prepare for a gig?
C: Do our makeup together, stretches, and compliments. Some vocal warm ups if we are being super good to ourselves!
BOT: What can people look forward to about your set?
C: THE LOOKS.
BOT: Finish the sentence. If we weren’t making music we would…
C: Be cowgirls: lassoing liberation!
