KOY's recent release, 'Heat' sores with triumphant melodies, haunting pads and sawing synths. Tangerine Dream meets Björk in this Russian-born artist's work, playing with our sense of nostalgia but with no shortage of the adventurous. Drawing inspiration from humanity, love, and the emotional stressors that come with living in Berlin, KOY brings her own brand of new wave pop to Clash Symbols #5.

BangOn Team: Tell us a little about your project. What’s your sound?

KOY: Electronic Mermaid Witchcraft! KOY is my solo project. I started it at the beginning of this year out of the urge to work based on a rather flexible model. Something that is neither bound to a specific genre, nor a story; a platform I can use to artistically reflect my own beliefs and the things that surround me.

BOT: How do you go about songwriting?

K: I wake up, I feel, and I write.

BOT: Who are your biggest influences?

K: People, love, life, nature, space, video games, aliens, chiptune music, pop, industrial, goths, wave... and all the sounds they come with.

BOT: What’s been your lowest and highest point as a band/project?

K: This project is not very old yet, so I guess there are neither highs nor lows. Every new concert and release feels like a small victory, but I can say not having enough budget to engage more talents I§d love to work with is challenging. However, I am not the only one here - money is a struggle for most creatives I know.

BOT: What’s your ultimate aim?

K: To be able to make music until a very old age, constantly evolve and learn, and share that experience with people in the hope to give them an experience that puts them in touch with themselves and their feelings, makes them trip, and gives them hope. Something like that.

BOT: You have the chance to play one song for a legend of your choice. What do you play?

K: Aki Kaurismäki. I would let him chose. I love his work so much! The way he creates a balance between realism and fiction, desperation and hope is so beautiful, socially important, and highly inspiring.

The desperate comedy of Aki Kaurismäki.

BOT: What does Berlin do for you musically?

K: It is giving me the right amount of emotional stress I guess.

BOT: What do we have to look forward to in the coming months from you?

K: I am gonna drop a video for my first single, 'Heat' real soon, as well as more single releases within the following months. There are also some concerts planned. One is in October at Madame Claude with the wonderful Benedikt! I am really looking forward to that.

BOT: Donald Trump has invited you to play a private party for him. He’ll pay you $1,000,000. Nobody ever has to know. Do you play?

K: Sure! I'd love to! I'd play my song, 'Dictatorship Techno'.
