There are certain bands that don't give you a choice. Particular frontwomen who kick your autonomy over the back fence like a misplaced football. A sound, a vibe, and a live set that make you throw in the towel of subjectivity and say, 'Well I suppose I have to fucking like this band, don't I?' Because they're that good. One such act is Mondo Fumatore: heavy on the Brit-pop and twinkly-eyed indie. Mondo's members have enough charm to fuel a planet: from Endai on drums (whose ability to balance a lit ciggy on his lips throughout a set verges on the mystical), to playful and boisterous Marc on guitar, and then local hero, Gwendolin on her gorgeous Mustang bass. We love this band. We never had a choice.
BangOn Team: Tell us a little about your band. What’s your sound?
Mondo: We met on the blue planet and travelled into the black in a yellow spaceship. We collected sound waves of every colour, slid on a rainbow through a wormhole back to a practice space in Kreuzberg. We play human-friendly rock for friendly humans.
BOT: How do you go about songwriting?
Mondo: We receive the song data from an old fax machine on Mars (we think).
BOT: Who are your biggest influences?
Mondo: Magnetism and sunshine.
BOT: What’s been your lowest and highest point as a band?
Marc and Endai: Highest is white Russian haze. Lowest is nearly all our tour money got stolen on tour.
Gwendolin: Having the whole Teenage Fanclub laugh at my joke.
BOT: What’s your ultimate aim?
Mondo: Staying together in this band for another 20 years.
BOT: You have the chance to play one song for a legend of your choice. What do you play?
Mondo: Maybe we don’t speak English well enough to understand that question. But believe us… we tried.
BOT: What does Berlin do for you musically?
G: Berlin is my hometown. We have a lot of friends and family here supporting us.
BOT: What do we have to look forward to in the coming months from you?
Mondo: Concerts in and around Berlin and thanks to the beloved Party Fears and the sweet Last Days of Elvis, concerts in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
BOT: Which muppet would you take in a fist fight?
G: I would choose Rolf, the dog on the piano, but just pretend to fight him and then cuddle him like crazy, because he was my first crush.
E: Kermit seems pretty weak.
M: Fozzie Bear.
